Welcome Survivors Voices Press!

I’m so proud of the team at Survivors Voices for the brilliant achievement of setting up a trauma-informed, independent publishing arm – Survivors Voices Press. SVP is a survivor-led independent publisher that amplifies the voice and experience of survivors, promoting understanding of trauma and ally-ship with abuse survivors. Our mission is to provide a trauma-informed platform for survivors’ work, filling the gap in mainstream publishing and challenging the stigma associated with accounts of abuse. Created by survivors, for survivor writers and readers, as well as the wider public, as far as I know we’re the only trauma-informed specialist independent publisher in the UK; although if you know different, please get in touch, we’d love to connect!

We’ve already published our first three books and I’m excited to share them with you.

Poppy in Pieces is an honest and hopeful Young Adult thriller, set in South London, about the power of friendship as Poppy tries to tell someone her secret that her stepfather is sexually abusing her. But how does she tell about this horror in her life? The story is set in the context of a school production of ‘The Tempest’ and the themes of ‘The Tempest’ of rape, bullying, gangs and whether to take revenge or not run through the story. Poppy’s family is dysfunctional, and the story of emotional struggle is told with sensitivity and insight showing the damage child sexual abuse and school bullying by girls can do to mental health. Can Poppy find the strength to tell? Does new boy Harry fancy her? Will she and Harry get together?

Many of us will know someone who has been raped but what’s it really like? The Reality of Rape is a  concise memoir that takes an honest look at Jenny’s  experience of living with the impact of rape. It illustrates the ways in which trauma manifests itself at different times through her life. Jenny shares her story in the hope that it will help others to feel less alone and increase awareness of the damage caused by this heinous crime.
